How to Safely Pack Fragile Items
July 7th, 2020Packing for a move take a lot of effort. Most people can say that a lot of that effort is put into packing fragile items. Since most of these item likely more expensive belongings you’re bring along with you, being careful with your packing will be worth it in the end.
Preparing in Advance
You have to prepare in advance. Properly packing up valuable, breakable items need some specific time and planning. This is not the time to rush and just throw things in boxes. Even if you are hiring movers, ensure these things are taken care of beforehand. Also, be sure to have the right tools. Some items you may need are durable boxes in a variety of sizes, packing paper, bubble wrap, scissors, and packing tape. Try to pack up these items on a table instead of the floor. That way there’s no chance of stepping on anything and having it break.
Plates
When wrapping, have each plate in bubble wrap and tape it for extra protection. Vertically pack plates in lined boxes with a good amount packing paper around them. Be sure to place paper in between the standing plates and don’t overpack the boxes. Plates can shatter easily, even in secured boxes, so space them out in different boxes as needed.
Glasses
Wrap glasses individually with packing paper and place scrunched up paper inside the large pieces hold them in place. Place packing paper around small or medium boxes on the top and bottom, and layer spaces around glasses with paper too. You should place the heavier items on the bottom of the box, with lighter pieces on top of the box so that they don’t break.
Special Items
When packing your more random and oddly shaped items, it’s essential to consider the shape and size of item and any handles or protruding pieces that could easily break in transport. These are the items that you may need to create a makeshift box for. This could mean take pieces of cardboard and taping them up around this item. That way, all angles are covered and nothing will get scratched in the moving truck. Make sure to mark this item so that movers know what it is and can figure out the best way to carry it in and out of the truck. If you feel that these specialty items can’t be packed, at least try to wrap them in a sheet or something protective to avoid scratching or scuffing.
